Why Artificial Food Preservatives are Bad for your Health

posted on 2010-02-23 by JPerez
To keep food fresh from preventing bacterial and fungal growth, artificial food preservatives are invented. Even though natural preservatives are abundant and ready to use, most food products still opt for the artificial variety. These preservatives are claimed to be safe, but the truth is, once the food is high on artificial preservative, then you are already in the danger zone. Once we consume more of these foods that are high on artificial preservatives, we will end up destroying our health in big proportions.

Sulfur dioxide and sulphites are used in fruits, wines and dried fruits and vegetable, in order for these products to avoid turning to brown. But sulphites are linked with hyperactivity and it is not recommended for people who are suffering from asthma.

Nitrates are used to bring up the flavor to a higher notch. Large use of nitrates is already fatal to your health. In fact, infants and children should not intake any products with nitrates. Especially with infants, for they are more susceptible to the effects of nitrate in the body. Nitrate is bad for your blood because it will be converted in your blood to form a harder substance that makes it really difficult for the blood to transport oxygen.

Many food products use Butylated hydroxyanisole and hydroxytoluene (BHT) as preservatives. But with these preservatives, you are more prone to get tumors and cancer for their carcinogenic characteristics. Cholesterol imbalance, hyperactivity, asthma attack, and some other disorders are linked to products that use BHT as preservative. Moreover, BHT is banned to several countries across the globe.

If you are a person who likes sauce for their food, check if benzoic acid is present in your favorite condiment. Benzoic acid is linked to hyperactivity and also skin and eye irritations. Asthmatic people can not consume products with benzoic acid, and it also can cause neurological problems.

It is okay if you go for products with artificial preservatives in it, but be sure to minimize or monitor how much you have consumed. Too much of it can cause trouble. But the sure way to preserve your health, you can always gor for natural way of preserving foods!
