A Fresno beef-packing plant that recently recalled nearly 22,723 pounds of ground beef over concerns that it may be linked to an outbreak of salmonella is now coming under scrutiny from a U.S. congresswoman.
Rep. Rosa DeLauro, a Connecticut Democrat, wants to shut down the Fresno-based Beef Packers Inc. temporarily until officials determine what caused the recalls, the most recent of which happened last Friday.
"This is another glaring example of the problems we face in our nation's food-safety system," DeLauro said in a prepared statement.
In August, the company recalled 825,769 pounds of ground beef over concerns that it may be connected to an outbreak of salmonella. The meat was shipped in June to retail distribution centers in California, Colorado, Utah and Arizona.
It's the nation's largest beef recall this year, and the second-largest recall of ground beef since the beginning of 2008.
